Fall Wood Ducks

In my experience, wood ducks are notorious for being skittish around humans. There are several great places to find them in my area, but they’re always elusive, except for the longest of shots. Think 800-1200mm lens type distances, and even then they’re not filling the frame. I’ve been trying for years to get good shots of these gorgeous birds.

However, there’s a special place not too far from my home with a small pond surrounded by trees, some of them of the crab apple variety. It’s these crab apples that the wood ducks search for. I’ve watched them feed on them throughout the day. I theorize that the ducks are more tolerant of people in this place due to the easy supply of these tasty treats. Luckily for me, they are. This is the only time I’ve seen them just swim right up near a human…so close that the nearest focusing distance on my long lenses isn’t close enough. What a rare opportunity! What makes this place even more special is that it’s surrounded by beautiful trees on the western side that light up just right when the sun rises. The Fall colors make these reflections even more pronounced on the surface of the water. It was during one of these sub-freezing mornings that I was able to capture this image of these two wood duck drakes. They’re one of the most colorful of North American ducks, and with the added colors reflecting on the water made for one of the most intense scenes of color I’ve ever photographed.
