Miss Piggy

It was early November in the sub-arctic of Northern Canada and the days and evenings were often cloudy. It’s a great time of year and the perfect location for the Aurora Borealis; however, the cloud cover continued to prevent seeing them. The conditions were perfect on this evening for the Northern Lights to come out, but we just needed the clouds to lift. We kept checking the sky and started to see the clouds begin to clear. We packed up our gear, put fresh batteries in, and swapped over to the appropriate astrophotography lens of choice, and headed out. Now to find the perfect foreground for the shots. The sky was starting to dance with the glowing, green light. I was nervous it wouldn’t last long enough for us to photograph it, while we continued to look for just the right foreground. Then we had the idea: ”hey, let’s photograph Miss Piggy!” The polar bear guide protecting our group wasn’t likely too happy with us…as we were so close to the coast where the bears like to roam, and they move silently. To capture the night sky, we needed to have all headlamps and flashlights turned off during the long exposures. Due to the snow-covered ground providing the perfect camouflage for nearby polar bears, this presented quite a challenge for our guide. Luckily, we were able to capture this awe-inspiring scene, while intermittently turning on our lights and inspecting for any bear activity.

Miss Piggy, as affectionately nicknamed, is a C-46 cargo aircraft that suffered a mechanical failure in 1979. Detected by the pilot almost immediately after take-off, the pilot attempted to return to the airport. He was able to land it, but not without suffering significant damage due to the rough terrain. Luckily all crew members survived the crash landing, though some suffered serious injuries. You can read more about the story here.
